No paperwork between you and a first face
Emerald Chat opens on the matching screen, not on a sign-up form. The first time you visit, your browser asks whether emeraldchat.cam may use your camera and microphone. Say yes and you are ready. You can start as a guest; there is no profile to build and no photo to upload first.
Signing in is optional, and useful. It ties your coins, settings and any VIP status to you, so they follow you when you switch from a laptop to a phone or clear your browser. On a phone, the home-screen setup makes Emerald Chat open full screen like an app.
Pick how you want to be met
Before each match you choose a mode. Video is the default. Voice keeps your camera off but lets you hear each other. Text is a typed conversation, still with one person only. You can change mode between matches as often as you like.
Press start and Emerald Chat connects you with one other adult who is looking at the same moment. A short card comes with them: nickname, age, country, level, language. It is enough for an opener, and it is the same short card they get about you, alongside whatever your lens takes in.
One person, one conversation, one tap to move on.
Talking, translating and moving on
While you talk, the text box stays available for typed messages, and beside each message is a small translate control that rewrites it for you. That little control is how a conversation between someone in Ohio and someone in Accra keeps flowing.
When a conversation runs its course, press next. Emerald Chat finds you someone new, and the person you left is matched again too. If a match breaks the rules, press report instead, pick a reason and move on; moderators handle the rest. The safety page explains how that works behind the scenes.
When you want to choose instead of chance
Random matching is only one door. The online list shows who is around now, and you can ask a particular person for a private one-to-one video call. The Live tab in the same list holds live rooms, where you can watch, chat with the room and request a private call from inside; Emerald Chat live covers rooms in detail.
Private calls, gifts and some live rooms use coins. You always see a top-up prompt or a confirmation before anything paid happens.
A live room, from the inside
Open the Live tab on the online list and tap any room to step inside. Once in, swipe up or down to move to the next room, the way you would flick through short videos. The room chat runs along the bottom; type a hello, and if the words on screen are in a language you do not read, the translate control handles it the same way it does in a call.
Rooms have a few extras that matches do not. You can send a gift, and now and then a free one is on offer. Some rooms run a spinning wheel. A handful are gated: entry might need a ticket, a follow first, or a paid account, and you see which condition applies before you commit. When you would rather talk to the person alone, the call button inside the room starts a private one-to-one request without making you leave first.
Keeping in touch with someone you clicked with
Random matching means you will rarely land on the same person twice by chance. If a conversation was worth repeating, signing in gives you the tools for that. Every member has a personal page, and following someone from there keeps them within reach. Messages let you pick a thread back up later, and when they show up on the online list you can invite them to a private call.
Nothing about this is automatic. Following is a choice you make, and you can keep every match as a one-off if that is how you like it.
Free matches, the Reward Center, then coins
Emerald Chat is free to start, and the order in which things happen is simple.
- New members get free matches to begin with.
- Next comes the Reward Center, parked above the start button. Its timer runs down, you tap to collect a prize of matches or coins, and the clock restarts from that tap. Collecting several times a day is fine, and a missed day costs you nothing.
- When free matches run out, coins keep random matching going. The same coins pay for private calls, gifts and ticketed rooms.
- VIP members see member pricing on top-ups and carry a badge they can hide.
What we ask of everyone
Every account must belong to someone 18 or older. Keep clothes on, keep it friendly, do not ask anyone for money or contact details, and do not record people without their consent. The reward sizes, countdown lengths and prices you see can change over time, so the screen in front of you is always the current version. For what each coin is worth spending on, see the Emerald Chat coins guide.
If something does not work first time
Nearly every first-visit problem comes down to permissions. If your video stays black, look for the camera symbol in the address bar and allow Emerald Chat to use it, then reload. If nobody can hear you, check the microphone permission and your volume. Other apps holding the camera, like a meeting you forgot to close, can block it too.
On iPhone, camera access for a site sometimes sits in the Safari settings rather than in a pop-up, so check there if the prompt never appeared. On Android, Chrome keeps the same switches under site settings. A weak connection shows up as a frozen or blocky picture; moving closer to the router or switching from mobile data to Wi-Fi usually clears it.
